Warming a Cold Garage

Warming a cold garage can be easily accomplished by adding an electric garage heater.  Have you been struggling in a cold garage with poor results?  Consider installing a fixed electric heater with thermostat on a dedicated 240-volt circuit.

Some years ago I got tired of trying to work on the car or my woodworking projects wearing gloves and a winter coat.  I first tried to warm my garage by using a portable plug-in unit (the Turbo model!)   It only provided enough heat if I stood right in front of it.  The next year I switched to a kerosene heater.  It was slow to heat the space and had to be refilled and cleaned regularly so I stopped using it.  Neither of my first two choices worked out well for me.  Maybe you’re having the same type of problems.

Electric Heater Facts

Remember that an electric heater begins warming any space immediately and is 100 % efficient.  All of the electricity is turned into heat or fan power with none wasted.  Fan-forced electric garage heaters come in many sizes and styles.  They are also inexpensive to buy and easy to operate.  With a thermostat to control the heater, you can have a very convenient and cost-effective solution to the problem.   They also require almost no maintenance and can heat difficult areas.  Places where other solutions, like natural gas, might be difficult to install.  Finally, there is also no need to worry about fumes or carbon monoxide poisoning.  Propane, kerosene, or other burning fuels can give off dangerous vapors.

Sizing Options

Electric garage heaters come in both 120 volt and 240-volt models.   A 240-volt heater will usually be the better choice for this type of application.    The rating for each heater is given in Watts, such as 2,000 or 4,000.  It takes more power (Amps X Volts = Watts) to run the higher wattage heaters.   A 240-volt model will heat faster at start-up than a 120-volt model.   Also, a smaller wattage heater may not be strong enough for fully warming a cold garage.   If you decide to go with 120 volts you might need to buy and install more than one unit.
