Whether you’re remodeling or just want to add more lighting, installing a new bathroom lighting fixture can help the look and functionality of the room. You’ll need to consider the size, as well as the style of your current vanity, or the one you plan to install, to determine which fixture options are appropriate. Follow these tips to help you choose the best bathroom lighting fixture for your home.

Size

First, consider the size of your bathroom. Is it a small half bath, or a large master bath with double sinks? Take a look around to visualize where the fixtures would go; is there room for just one above the mirror, or would an overhead light work best?

Consider how the position of the new fixture relates to the vanity. Keep in mind the length of certain fixtures, such as vanity fixtures with multiple bulbs, and make sure they are the appropriate length for your vanity. A vanity fixture with just two or three bulbs won’t be long enough to light an area over double sinks, for instance.

Use

In many homes, the majority of grooming takes place in master baths or full bathrooms near bedrooms. Those using these bathrooms typically like good lighting for applying makeup, styling hair, or trimming a beard.

Your home may also have a half bath on the lower level for guests. Half baths may not require as much lighting as full baths, so consider the bathroom’s functionality to determine how much lighting you’ll need.

Style

Once you’ve decided the amount of lighting you’ll need, consider the style you’d like to have. Bathroom lighting fixtures come in all shapes, sizes, styles, and finishes. If you’d like to match the finish of the fixtures within the room, make note of the finish on your faucets and other hardware before purchasing. If your bathroom has decorative elements, consider a fixture that matches the style, whether it be contemporary or classic.

Features

What features would you like from your new bathroom lighting fixture? If you have a master suite with a tub, you may want to install focused fixtures like sconces around the area, and add dimmers to tone down the light when trying to relax. Some vanity fixtures have bulbs which can be adjusted to face up, down, or to the sides, so decide if you’d like an adjustable or stationary fixture. You may want a fixture with a diffuser to prevent the light from casting shadows across your face when getting ready.
