Recessed Lighting in Kitchens and Other Areas

If you are looking for a new and fairly inexpensive way to update the appearance of your home, consider replacing your existing lights with recessed lighting in the ceiling.   This type of lighting can be used to highlight or accent something, such as a bar or a fireplace, or it can be used to add direct light to a work area, such as a kitchen island or an office.

The lights are hidden within the ceiling, so the room feels open and uncluttered.  There are no visible wires, just additional light, which can make a stunning difference.   Two common types of recessed fixtures are down lights (also called can lights), and swivel lights (also called eyeball lights.)

Down lights create a cone of light directly below them.  Wall lights or hanging fixtures light up a room, but they might throw shadows or be ineffective for a specific work area.   Down lights are good for an office or a countertop where the work can be done within the circle of light.  Also, several down lights can be installed in a row so that their cones overlap and the entire counter is well lighted.

Swivel lights also create a light below them, but the focal point can be adjusted by swiveling the bulb toward an object.   These lights are commonly used above artwork so that the light is focused on the statue or painting.  If that object is moved, or replaced, the light can be swiveled so that it points to something else in a different place.   The addition of direct light can have a dramatic effect on a room,  and really enhance the beauty of your favorite art.

This type of project requires a thorough knowledge of electrical wiring, so you should get a few quotes and hire a licensed electrician to complete it for you.  If you want to upgrade to recessed lighting, we are available to help.  You can simply give us a call at 317-271-1099, or you can send us a note through our on-line contact form.   We would be glad to give you a free estimate and explain the newest lighting options available.
